Acne is a hormonal condition caused by the androgenic hormone, which is the male hormone. As puberty sets in, these hormones become more active. Acne starts when oil and dead skin cells clog the pores and if germs get into the pores. This can lead to redness, swelling and pus. The most common sites for acne eruption are the face, back, chest and shoulders.

Acne is a broad term for skin disease involving sebum (skin oil), keratinization (shedding dead skin cells), and bacteria.  It can range from very mild acne consisting of mostly blackheads, whiteheads and pimples to severe cystic acne. Acne is the name of the disease entity. Pimples are clogged and infected hair follicles, which are one of the main signs and symptom of acne.

The best way to keep acne is check is to maintain a clean skin. Wash skin with gentle soap and water of acne wash. Avoid products that will clog your pores, most especially women prone to acne should be stay clear of heavy make-up and oily foundations. Do not poke/prod acne, as it will lead to scarring or spotting on the face.  Also avoid stress, as cortisol, stress hormone can increase inflammation in the body. Manage stress through exercise, meditation, yoga or any other way that suits you. Also, watch your sodium intake, as some doctors believe high sodium may also be a trigger.

Products which contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide help with acne. Retinoids (Vitamin A derivatives) and some antibiotics (either taken orally or used topically) are also part of treatment options. For women who experience break outs during periods, using birth-control pills have been helpful for some.

Another Set of Products Used in Treatment of Acne

Tea-tree oil is also reputed to be a good remedy for acne and a more natural option for those who prefer the organic life. A minimum concentration of up to 5% of the oil is best for mild acne and 15% for severe acne.
