If You Are in the Aso-Ebi Group
Being in the aso-ebi group means the fabric choice is already made for you — but the styling decisions are entirely yours, and they matter enormously. The fabric is the equaliser; your cut, accessories, gele, and shoes are what separate a memorable look from a forgettable one.
Cut and silhouette: Work with a tailor who has experience with your specific fabric. Lace and George fabrics behave differently from Ankara and need different construction approaches. Book your tailor at least six weeks before the wedding if you are in the UK or US — good Nigerian tailors in the diaspora get booked up quickly around wedding season.
Gele: A professionally tied gele elevates any aso-ebi look instantly. If you are in the UK, gele tyers are available in most cities with a significant Nigerian community — London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leicester. In the US, check within your local Nigerian community or book in advance on Instagram. Do not attempt a DIY gele the morning of the wedding.
Shoes and bag: Coordinate but do not match exactly. A bag in the same family of colour as your fabric and shoes that pick up one tone from the print creates a composed look without looking like you bought everything from the same table at the market.
