Carolin Holzhuber is an Austrian born women’s shoe designer currently based between Vienna and London. After receiving her BA in Fashion at the Fashion Institute Vienna Hetzendorf (in cooperation with the University of Arts Linz), she went on to receiver her MA in Fashion Footwear at the prestigious London College of Fashion in 2014. While she did not graduate until 2014, she has been producing at least one collection per year since 2009. Every shoe Carolin designs is in itself a piece of artwork, so much so that she has been showcased in the Virtual Shoe Museum alongside more well-known names as Iris Van Herpen. Her designs are meant to cause you to pause and analyse what you’re seeing. Carolin feels that footwear is not all about being wearable; she uses handcrafting and sometimes innovative materials to create a luxury product.
Combining culture and craft, Austrian-born footwear designer Carolin Holzhuber’s work is often an artistic reflection of meaningful concepts as well as creative imaginings and interpretations of her surrounding environment. Viewing her work more as sculpture than footwear construction, Carolin’s motivation is to develop a continuing dialogue between her pieces and those who encounter her work. Functioning as compositions made up of many crucial and carefully thought of components, the beauty of her work is fully appreciated when understanding her footwear as objects to be considered, reconsidered, and examined, detail by detail.
