Different Types of Facial Foundations

Liquid Foundation

A makeup foundation is a cosmetic product that acts like a base and prepares the face for makeup application. Foundation helps to even out the skin tone and make it smooth and uniform by covering light blemishes and scars. For best blemish and scar coverage, use a concealer along with the foundation. The right shade of foundation will disappear into your face making it appear as if you are wearing no makeup at all. The type you choose will depend on skin type and coverage level.

Cream foundations provide heavier coverage and are formulated for normal to dry skin.

Oil-based Foundation Makeup

Oil-based foundations add moisture and can “plump up” skin. This makes them a great choice for people with dry skin or older women who want to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Always shake the bottle before use as the oil usually separates in the bottle.

Tinted Moisturizer

Tinted moisturizer provides light coverage, but is best for women with pretty good skin. It’s basically a moisturizer with a bit of sheer color. It is great for warm periods when little coverage and some moisture are required.

Sheer Foundation

Sheer foundation is made with silicones and glides on smoothly. If you are going for the “no foundation” look, this is a great option.

Matte or “Oil-free” Foundation

Matte foundation is “oil free” and are formulated with water. They dry fast and need to be worked with quickly. Using a primer or moisturizer first adds an extra layer of moisture.

Mineral Foundation

mineral foundation

Mineral makeup is the new rave and made up almost always primarily of minerals, which come from nature. It’s a great bet for women with sensitive skin or allergies.

Waterproof Foundation

Waterproof foundation is made to stay on for a long time, which makes it perfect for humid areas and hot days. It also means you may not be able to remove it with just cleanser and water, you may need a makeup remover. These foundations can clog up pores and you may be more susceptible to blackheads, so it isn’t advisable for daily use.

Mousse or Whipped Foundation

mousse foundation

Mousse or whipped foundation is liquid foundation with air whipped in. This makes it light and smooth. They have a weightless feel and matte finish.

Stick Foundation

Stick foundations are portable and do not spill. They are “solid” and give heavier coverage. They are best for covering blemishes, reddened areas, dark under-eye circles and scars.

Powder (or Compact) Foundation

Powder foundation is a powder and foundation in one. It comes in loose powder or pressed powder in varied formulations.

Spray Foundation

Spray foundation is used to refresh makeup, when make-up fades hours after application. It comes in different shades and are easy to apply.
