The 71st edition of the annual Tony Awards held in New York on the 11th of June, 2017 at the Radio City Music Hall.
The annual award which is actually named the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre is a celebration of excellence in Broadway Theatre. These awards, which also include non-competitive awards, are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League for Broadway productions and performances.
The awards are named after Antoinette “Tony” Perry, a co-founder of the American Theatre Wing.
The Tony Awards are considered the highest U.S theatre honor, equivalent to the Academy Awards (Oscars) for motion pictures (movies); the Grammy Awards for music and the Emmy Awards for television.
The Tony forms the fourth spoke in the EGOT (an acronym for all four awards) for someone who has won all four awards.
The Tony was hosted by Kevin Spacey and had in attendance notable celebrities who strutted the red carpet in their “Sunday’s best.”
