Asoebi is actually a Yoruba phrase that literally means “family wear.” This is because for most traditional Yoruba weddings (you know the Yorubas love their parties right?) a uniform fabric is usually picked in order to “differentiate” the family members from the rest of the guests. This later on got introduced to the guests in general, depending on who is interested in buying the material.
Asoebi is not only limited to weddings though, as other events such as burials, coronation ceremonies, and many more. Once the material has been purchased, each person then gets the choice of style to sew their fabrics with. Sometimes, some friends can decide to further differentiate themselves b sewing similar styles with their fabrics.
