Want To Go Natural? The Basics Of Natural Hair Care

Natural hair has been winning for some time now. More and more women embrace their natural texture on a daily basis and are willing to put in the work to care and nourish the hair.

Going natural is a big step in achieving healthy hair, and healthy hair is the best hair. The term natural hair is defined as relaxer-free hair, which is different from chemical-free hair.

The first step of going natural is choosing between the big chop (BC) or opting for a long-term transition. Big chopping involves the act of cutting off all of the relaxed and damaged ends, while transitioning is a process that allows the natural hair to grow while maintaining the relaxed hair for at least six months.

Avoid heat when going natural as your hair may be delicate and as you remove dangerous chemicals from your routine, adding heat can only cause more harm than good. Direct heat (flat irons, curling irons, straightening combs, blow dryers -without diffusers) dry out and damage curly, coily and kinky hair.
The type of hair you have will dictate the type of products you can and can not use. Most black people tend to have hair texture ranging from 3a (curly) to 4c (kinky/coily). Type 4 hair tends to absorb a lot more moisture than looser hair textures do therefore they need to constantly be moisturized. Never let type 4 hair become completely dry.
Always moisturize your hair. It is the most important aspect of natural hair care. I repeat, always moisturize your hair and drink lots of water.
