What are coconut water, milk and oil?

  1. Coconut water – This is refers to the first water that comes out of the white flesh of both the young and matured coconut after it has been cracked opened; this liquid is transparent or colourless. It has a moderately sweet taste, and it can be used for cooking, many people often drink this liquid immediately it is removed from the nut.
  2. Coconut milk– This is a creamy and whitish liquid that comes out of the blended or grated matured coconut flesh. The milk is only gotten by grating matured coconut flesh and thereby mixing it with a little water and then squeezing the milk out without any additives by using a tiny holed sieve or a cheese cloth. There are majorly two ways of grating this nut, the traditional method which involves the use of a grater, and the modern method that involves the use of food processor or blender.
  3. Coconut oil– This is the oil that is gotten from coconut milk, after the milk has been squeezed out, it is then left for 1 day to rest in a bowl undisturbed in the fridge or in a cold place, this is done to enable the white curd or cream to separate from coconut milk and then float on top of the bowl. The white cream is afterward scooped out and it is then placed on a heat source for the extra liquid to escape out, leaving only the melted curd in form of transparent oil.  This milk is said to contain saturated fat.

How To Make Coconut Oil

  • Brown Coconuts (how many depends on the quantity of oil you want to make)

  • Cutlass or cleaver knife

  • Sturdy kitchen knife

  • Blender

  • Chopping board

  • Sieve

  • Refrigerator

  • Filter paper or cheesecloth

  • Jar

1. Break open the coconuts with cutlass or cleaver knife (be careful!)

2. After the coconuts have been broken, cut out the fleshy white part into bowl with sharp knife (or a sturdy spoon).

3. Grate the fleshy pieces ( watch video for this method). If using a blender, chop cut pieces into smaller bits, put in the blender and blend.

4. Add in a little water to ensure that coconut blends more smoothly.

5. Place filter paper or sieve cloth over jar.

6. Pour blended mixture onto filter paper or cheese cloth, a little at a time so the fluid goes into the jar and the flesh is filtered out. With a cheese cloth you can squeeze out more from the meat.

7. After all of the liquid has been sieved into the jar, close and leave in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. This process allows for the oil to split from the liquid.

8. When the waiting time is up, scoop out the whitish curd which will have formed during sitting period to reveal the coconut oil.

9. Store your coconut oil in refrigerator for personal and home use.

This coconut oil DIY method is the Cold Press Method as it is made with no heat.

This allows the oil to retain more of its natural health benefits, vitamins and anti-oxidants.
