Dressing Your Body Part 6: Inverted Triangle Shape

This is the part 6 of the “dressing for your body” series. Today, we are looking at the Inverted Triangle shape.

The inverted triangle is characterized by a bottom half that is proportionally smaller than the top half with little definition between the waist and hips. Basically, this shape starts broad from the top and narrow down towards the legs. This shape has ample bust, slim hips and the bum tends to be flat. There is also a tendency to gain weight in the belly and upper body.

The key to dressing this body type is to balance the broader upper body with the narrower lower body to create an illusion of an hourglass effect. Clothes that will add curves to the hips and bottom, while creating a more defined waist are key here.

Dos

  • Tops that will accentuate the waist and balance the bust with the hips. Tops like narrow v-necks, tops with nipping or banding at the waist. Dark colored tops, wrap-style tops, tailored shirts and jackets
  • Go for bottoms that will enhance the lower body like pants with embellishments or flap-style pockets; boot cut or wide leg pants, full or A-line skirts; Cargo pants; jeans with whiskering at the hips

Don’t

  • Though this shape can play with skirt lengths as well, but avoid miniskirts as they can make you look more top heavy.
