Dressing for an Interview: Men

When it comes to dressing for males, their option may seem limited, but if not careful, they can also go wrong with their interview outfits. Just as for females, keeping things simple is the key so that an interviewer can focus on one’s achievements as opposed to being put off by the outfit.

  1. Suit, Shirt and Tie

For most interviews, a suit is the most appropriate attires. The best choice of colours for suits are black, navy blue, light or dark gray. Kindly leave the fancy colours for the red carpet and new yam festival please. A well-fitted suit cannot be overstated with the right length too. An oversized or overly long suit would make one look sloppy. For the suit, a white shirt will go with most colours, but a blue shirt will work fine as well. Don’t be too flashy with a brightly coloured shirt or patterned shirt, as those are a little less formal. A dark conservative colour of tie is fine with small patterns or diagonal stripes. The aim is to pull off a well put-together look.

2. Belt, Suspenders and Socks

You can opt to wear suspenders or belt, but do not wear both at the same time. If you are a suspenders kind of guy, get buttons sewed into your trousers and wear suspenders that button on, not the cheap clip-on kind. If you are a belt kind of guy, endeavor to match your belt and shoes, colour wise.

3. Shoes and Socks

Show off your shoes. A good pair of fitting shoes or dark colour is the best. Remember, leave the psychedelic colours for the dance floor. Cap-toed oxfords is the best choice for style. Choose socks that are long enough to cover your legs when you sit down. Black, navy blue or grey socks are good.

4. Perfume

Do not wear an overwhelming amount of perfume, except your aim is to choke the interviewers into hiring you. Do not be a threat to their olfactory senses, it is not nice. Also, put on some anti-perspirant to battle any odour.
